CNM Update

The Silver Hill Board met with representatives of CNM last month to discuss various issues, mainly the school’s role in the neighborhood as a property owner and otherwise.

CNM officials vowed to not only retain the homes that have been bought up near the campus’ northeast corner (the southeast corner of Silver Hill), but also to fix them up and closely vet tenants who move in. In that same area, CNM has been using an empty lot at Coal Place and Buena Vista for overflow parking. We were told that such parking will continue through 2019 while construction goes on in the center of campus, which has pushed more students and employees (and their cars) to that northeast area of campus.

We also learned about a new program that provides paid student internships to build eco-friendly and sustainable small homes in Albuquerque.  Read about it here.

We vow to follow CNM and its governing board closely. Here are two ways to do that. Here is a link to the CNM Board’s schedule of meetings and agendas/minutes. And here you can keep track of the Board’s Long Term Plan.

Let us know if there are other issues we can bring to the attention of CNM leadership.

SHNA Board Meeting Minutes – 02/12/2018

Time and Location of the Meeting: the meeting was held at the Heights Community Center on Buena Vista and was called to order at 7:00 pm.

Board Members Present: James Montalbano, Rich Braziel, Elizabeth Doak, Don McIver, Aaron DuBay, Tom Ocken, Sean Matney & Richard Hallett. Sign-in Sheet

Others Present: Jill Sattler, Jim Sattler, Steve Thoma, Jill Marley Berry, Denise Tibbetts, & Margaret Govoni. Sign-in Sheet

Roosevelt Park Events: Aaron DuBay’s vision for Roosevelt park was that, “We want to reclaim the park.” One type of event suggested was “Movie Nights” with food trucks. This could be similar to “Tasty Tuesdays” which was started at Hyde Park 5 years ago. A food truck vendor originally ran it but the neighborhood is now involved. Now they do free Yoga, live music, and food trucks. They have been so successful that attendance has grown from 50 people per event to 200 people per event. They are now able to pay a small amount to the Yoga instructors and to the bands. Food trucks pay $80/event to the Tasty Tuesday organization. Some of the things we learned were that 1) We would need to have a port-a-potty & if the event grows we would need to get a second port-a-potty that is handicapped accessible, 2) Event permits are issued for the season from the Parks & Recreation Dept., 3) Electricity is provided by the food trucks for the bands or to run movies, 4) We would need to comply with movie copyright requirements, 5) A trash dumpster is being provided for free for Tasty Treats by Bin There, Dump That, 6) Social Media is the main marketing tool including Facebook, email, & Nextdoor, 7) The coordinators are being paid approximately $40/month now after working for free for the first 4 years.
