Thursdays @ Roosevelt!

The Silver Hill Neighborhood Association is launching a weekly gathering at Roosevelt Park at Coal and Sycamore Southeast. “Thursdays at Roosevelt” starts June 21, 2018, and runs through October 5th. From 5-8 pm every Thursday at historic Roosevelt Park for a limited first-year run, the event will feature food trucks, music, games, and family-friendly fun. The event is modeled after Hyder Park’s “Tasty Tuesdays.” Contact us in various ways outlined below for a preview story, or come join us every Thursday this summer.

SHNA Board Meeting Minutes – 7/9/18

Time and Location of the Meeting: the meeting was held at CNN Conference Room and was called to order at 7:00 pm.

Board Members Present: James Montalbano, Aaron Du Bay, Elizabeth Doak, Don McIver, Tom Ocken, Jill Berry, Sean Matney & Richard Hallett.

Others Present: Tracy Mallette, Ben Wasserott

408 Maple (Ash between Lead & Coal): We were expecting a presentation from and conversation with a representative from Lucaya House, regarding their garbage bins and a request for a wrought-iron fence.  No one came to the meeting.

Lead/Coal Safety Committee: Ben Wasserott from University Heights paid a second visit to the Board to inform us of the formation of a task force, made up of representatives of affected neighborhoods, to advise the City about ways to improve safety along the Lead/Coal corridor between Nob Hill and Downtown. A 45-minute discussion brought up the main concerns — unsafe drivers, speeding drivers, one-way roads, road design, and lack of police enforcement. Per a July 3, 2018, letter from the City, neighborhoods are to nominate representatives to the task force by July 20th. Richard Hallett and James Montalbano agreed to serve as the SHNA reps and to recruit a resident of Lead/Coal to join them. The Board also discussed talking to neighbors to catalog their concerns and suggested solutions.

Roosevelt Park Thursday Summer Events: Board members, which included the Thursdays @ Roosevelt Committee, analyzed the first three weeks of the new event and were generally pleased. Items that need attention: Set-up each day (banners, parking cones); the performance of food vendors and the possibility of, after 7/12, considering a rotation of food trucks; musical acts; a tracking system for the event’s finances, including a Google Doc that will monitor income and outflow of funds (the food trucks should cover the music each week); and spreading the word on social media.

The Board voted unanimously to extend the event (permits permitting) to October 5, 2018, the eve of Balloon Fiesta.

National Night Out (8/7/18): The Board agreed to encourage folks to be out and about in the neighborhood on National Night Out but declined to organize a specific event, in light of the efforts being put into Thursdays @ Roosevelt.

Minutes: The June Board Meeting minutes were approved unanimously as corrected.

The meeting adjourned at 8:55 pm.

Heights Community Center makeover

The Heights Community Center on south Buena Vista is getting a face-lift. The iconic Depression-era building is getting ready to celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2019.

Expect to see new landscaping and plantings, including trees on the south side. New signage goes on the front. Art and photos will adorn the inside. IF YOU HAVE ANY old photos of the neighborhood, please share them with us or with Edgar Avila, the Center’s director.

The big project is the refurbishing of the dance hall floor. The original maple flooring will be retained and repurposed. This will elbow out the Tuesday night swing dancers for a few weeks.

Here is a link to the Center’s City web page.
